Which Types of Cancer Is CAR T Therapy Used For?

CAR T cell therapy is an innovative form of immunotherapy that enables the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells more effectively. In this treatment, a patient’s own T cells are genetically modified in a laboratory and reprogrammed to target cancer cells before being returned to the patient.

Which Types of Cancer Is CAR T Therapy Used For?

Today, CAR T therapy is mainly used in hematological cancers, meaning cancers of the blood and lymphatic system. It has become an important option especially for patients who do not respond to standard treatments or whose disease has relapsed.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

One of the most successful application areas of CAR T therapy is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. It can be used especially in children and young adult patients when no response is achieved with other treatments.
Studies show that CAR T therapy can provide high response rates in some resistant ALL cases.

Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL)

CAR T therapy is also used for Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma, which is one of the most common types of lymphoma. It can be applied as an important alternative treatment in patients whose disease relapses or shows resistance despite chemotherapy and other standard treatments.

Mantle Cell Lymphoma

Another condition in which CAR T therapy is used is Mantle Cell Lymphoma. In this rare type of lymphoma, CAR T therapy can produce promising results, especially in advanced or resistant cases.

Multiple Myeloma

In recent years, CAR T cell therapy has also started to be used in patients with Multiple Myeloma. In this type of cancer affecting the bone marrow, CAR T therapy can be an important alternative, especially when other treatment options are exhausted.

Follicular Lymphoma and Other B Cell Lymphomas

CAR T therapy can also be applied in some types of B cell lymphomas. In conditions such as follicular lymphoma, this treatment method may be considered especially when the disease relapses or becomes resistant to standard treatments.

Which Cancers May Be Treated in the Future?

Scientific studies on CAR T therapy are progressing rapidly. Current research is investigating whether this treatment can be effective not only in blood cancers but also in solid tumors such as lung cancer, breast cancer, and brain tumors.

Developments in this field may allow CAR T cell therapy to be applied to a much broader group of patients in the coming years.

Conclusion

Today, CAR T cell therapy is most commonly used in the following cancer types:

  • Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)
  • Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL)
  • Mantle Cell Lymphoma
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Follicular Lymphoma and some other B cell lymphomas
