Can You Exercise During Ramadan?

Ramadan is a period when not only our eating habits but also our daily energy levels and physical performance change. Should we exercise while fasting throughout the day? Is sahur really necessary? Why do headaches become more frequent?

Here are ways to stay healthy during Ramadan;

Dehydration Is the Greatest Risk

The most common cause of headaches experienced during the first days of Ramadan is lack of water. Since water cannot be consumed during the day, the time between iftar and sahur should be planned carefully. Drinking at least 1 liter of water before sahur can be a good starting point. For those accustomed to consuming coffee, caffeine withdrawal may also cause headaches. Therefore, reducing coffee intake before Ramadan can make adaptation easier.

Skipping Sahur Means Energy Loss

Saying “I am too sleepy anyway” and skipping sahur may lead to a greater drop in energy during the day.

What should be included at sahur:

  • Complex carbohydrates such as oats
  • Protein such as yogurt or eggs
  • Healthy fats such as chia seeds or walnuts
  • Vegetables or fruit

Overnight prepared oat mixtures are both practical and balanced options. The combination of protein, fiber, and healthy fats helps provide longer lasting satiety.

Body Adaptation Takes Time

Feeling challenged during the first few days is normal. However, the body usually adapts to the new routine within 4 to 5 days. Although eating early in the morning may feel difficult at first, metabolism can adjust in a short time.

When Should You Exercise?

Exercise does not have to be completely abandoned during Ramadan. However, intensity and timing should be planned carefully. Light to moderate intensity workouts after iftar may be more appropriate. The goal should not be to improve performance but to maintain health.
