The Hidden Danger Behind Red Eyes: Eyelash Mite
Persistent redness, itching, burning, and a stinging sensation in the eyes are often dismissed as a simple allergy. However, these complaints may be caused by an invisible yet highly impactful eyelash mite known as Demodex.

These microscopic parasites can cause long lasting eye problems by settling particularly at the base of the eyelashes and along the edges of the eyelids. These eight legged organisms are smaller than the tip of a needle and cannot be seen with the naked eye; however, their symptoms are quite noticeable.
What Is Eyelash Base Parasite Demodex?
Demodex is one of the most common microscopic parasites found on human skin and around the eyes. Two types are especially prominent:
- Demodex folliculorum
- Demodex brevis
These mites live at the base of the eyelashes, on the outer parts of hair follicles, and in the meibomian glands of the eyelids that secrete oil. They feed on sebum and epithelial debris. Their average lifespan is about 15 days; however, under suitable conditions, they can multiply rapidly and their numbers may increase exponentially within a few weeks.
Which Symptoms Should Be Warning Signs?
- Persistent eye redness
- Constant itching and burning sensation
- Stinging and foreign body sensation
- Redness and sensitivity of the eyelids
- White dots or flaking at the base of the eyelashes
- Dandruff like deposits
- Eyelash loss
- Recurrent styes and eyelid infections
Who Is at Higher Risk?
The Demodex parasite may be present in many people; however, it multiplies more easily in certain groups:
- Elderly individuals
- People with weakened immune systems
- Those with oily skin types
- Individuals who frequently rub their eyes
- Those who do not pay attention to eyelid hygiene
Frequent eye rubbing in particular accelerates the proliferation of the parasites and leads to an increase in complaints.
What Is Demodex Blepharitis?
When the number of parasites increases excessively, a condition known as Demodex blepharitis may develop. This condition may cause;
- Inflammation of the eyelids
- Severe itching and redness
- A feeling of dryness
- Eyelash loss
- Problems such as recurrent eye infections.
What Should Be Considered for Prevention?
- Regularly cleaning the eyelids before going to sleep
- Always removing eye makeup
- Not sleeping with false eyelashes or contact lenses
- Changing pillowcases at least twice a week
- Avoiding rubbing the eyes
- Getting regular and sufficient sleep
Regular sleep reduces excessive sebum production in the skin, thereby limiting the parasites’ source of nourishment.
When Should Professional Support Be Sought?
If the redness, itching, and burning sensation in your eyes have persisted for a long time, it is important to consult an eye care specialist rather than waiting for the condition to resolve on its own. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, symptoms can be brought under control to a large extent.
