What Is Obesity? What Should You Be Mindful Of?

Obesity, which is becoming increasingly common worldwide, not only reduces quality of life but can also negatively affect life expectancy. However, it is a manageable health condition with the right treatment and lifestyle changes.

How Is Obesity Evaluated?

One of the most commonly used methods for evaluating obesity is calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight by the square of their height measured in meters.

  • Below 18.5: Underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9: Normal weight
  • 25 – 29.9: Overweight
  • 30 and above: Obese
  • 40 and above: Morbidly obese

However, weight alone is not enough to assess obesity. Waist circumference, body fat percentage, muscle mass, and overall health should also be taken into consideration.

The Main Causes of Obesity

Obesity does not develop due to a single cause. It can result from a combination of factors, including eating habits, lifestyle, genetic predisposition, hormonal balance, and environmental influences. Frequent consumption of high calorie and processed foods, insufficient physical activity, and a sedentary lifestyle are among the leading factors that increase the risk of obesity. In addition, a family history of obesity, thyroid disorders, and hormonal or metabolic conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome can make weight management more difficult. Certain medications may also contribute to weight gain. Furthermore, inadequate sleep, chronic stress, and irregular lifestyle habits can affect the hormones that regulate appetite, making it easier to gain weight. For this reason, obesity is a complex health condition that requires multiple contributing factors to be evaluated together.

What Health Problems Can Obesity Lead To?

Untreated obesity can increase the risk of developing many chronic diseases.

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Stroke
  • Sleep apnea
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Joint and knee problems
  • Certain types of cancer
  • Infertility and reproductive health issues
  • Psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety

For this reason, managing obesity is not only about losing weight but also about protecting overall health.

Can Obesity Be Treated?

Obesity is a treatable disease. The primary goal of treatment is not only to achieve weight loss but also to maintain a healthy weight over the long term and reduce obesity related health risks.

Treatment should be tailored to each individual. Eating habits, lifestyle, existing medical conditions, and metabolic health should all be evaluated together when creating a treatment plan.

Treatment may include:

  • Personalized nutrition plans,
  • Regular physical activity,
  • Behavioral modification strategies,
  • Medication when appropriate,
  • Bariatric surgery for eligible patients

depending on the individual's needs.

What Should You Keep in Mind for Healthy Weight Loss?

Crash diets that promise rapid results should be avoided if you want to achieve lasting weight loss. Healthy weight loss is possible by adopting sustainable lifestyle habits.

  • Maintain a balanced and regular diet.
  • Increase your daily physical activity.
  • Drink enough water.
  • Prioritize good sleep habits.
  • Avoid prolonged periods without eating.
  • Follow a weight loss plan under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Obesity is not simply a matter of carrying excess weight. It is a chronic disease that can affect the entire body. Early diagnosis, proper evaluation of its underlying causes, and individualized treatment plans can help prevent many obesity related health problems. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits and seeking professional support are the most important steps in managing obesity.
